In 1959 DE GRAAF ANTIQUARIAN BOOKSELLERS was founded by Bob and Maria Emilie de Graaf. From the very beginnings onwards they specialized in early printed books with emphasis on the period of the Renaissance and the Reformation. As early as 1960 a publishing house was added to the firm with essentially the same specialisation plus a gradually growing interest in bibliography and the history of the book. Among the grand total of some 400 available titles (including many multi-volume ones) were numerous standard works regularly consulted by librarians, students, collectors, rare book dealers, and the like.

In 2000 this publishing concern was sold in its entity and continued by its new owner under the name HES & DE GRAAF PUBLISHERS BV.

Advancing age was the reason that Bob and Emily decided to dissolve De Graaf Antiquarian Booksellers - from the beginning onwards established in Nieuwkoop, The Netherlands - as well. This was realized in 2008 when the remaining stock and the large reference library were sold by auction. The same year the former owners sold their premises in Nieuwkoop and bought an appartment house in the neighbouring town Alphen aan den Rijn.

During the nearly half a century that the firm has been active, a few small collections were privately assembled on account of the personal interest of the two owners who in the past have also published a number of books and articles on the respective subjects, those mainly being:

Erasmus and his contemporaries - The Radical Reformation - Neolatinism - Early Bibliography - The famous Dutch poet Joost van den Vondel.

The small number of books pertaining to these categories are now privately owned. For obvious sentimental reasons some will be kept; a few other items however can be sold and we both hope that these will find an interested new owner. The incidental old books which we put up for sale - we intend doling this either one-by-one or in a small group - will be accompanied by a full description and, wherever possible, by one or more illustrations.

It is with great regret that I have to let you know that my husband of many years, Bob de Graaf Bierbrauwer passed away on February 10, 2011. All those of you who have known him either as a friend, a colleague, a customer, or until the year 2000 as a publisher, must do without him, or be satisfied with my humble person. I shall try to offer you some nice books (and prints) in the future.
